We may not be able to knock on doors but we still need to reach voters in this high stakes election year and we need to get started NOW.
Please sign up to phone bank with us next Thursday, July 9, 2020, 5:00-8:00pm, when we kick off the first of our weekly Thursday Phone Bank Zoom parties. This Thursday we welcome Mac Callahan, Field Organizer for the Virginia 2020 Coordinated Campaign.  He will fill us in on the Coordinated Campaign and get us started on direct calls to voters on behalf of our combined Congressional, Senate and Presidential slate.

Hunter Mill Democrats Issue Statement on Recent Protests

At its general meeting on Wednesday, June 10, 2020, the Hunter Mill District Democratic Committee voted to approve a statement on the recent protests across the nation. The statement, authored by the Committee’s Vice Chair, Outreach, Shyamali Hauth, was approved without objection by the Committee’s membership, and is reprinted below:

Statement of the Hunter Mill District Democratic Committee, adopted June 10, 2020:

This weekend a million plus people around the nation, and thousands right here in the Hunter Mill District, gathered to protest the recent murders of George Floyd, Breonna Taylor, and Ahmaud Arbery. Their deaths have galvanized our country and our community to say enough is enough. The Hunter Mill District Democratic Committee (HMDDC) stands in solidarity with the black community and we raise our voices to say with conviction: Black Lives Matter!

We also acknowledge that these murders are just the latest in a series of incidents where black lives have been lost due to aggressive policing, criminal justice inequities, and systemic racism. Systemic Racism goes much deeper in our society and we must work continuously to educate and fight against systematic oppression and injustice. This work starts with tackling prejudices and biases present in our own communities, families, and in ourselves. Dr Martin Luther King, Jr., said it best when he said “Injustice anywhere is a threat to justice everywhere.” 

We commit to the hard work of self-examination and personal change. 

We commit to increasing diversity within our organization and our elected leadership.

The HMDDC will work to:

  • Educate and weed out inherent biases within ourselves and our organization and create a more inclusive and welcoming environment where all voices can be heard
  • Recruit and elect diverse leaders at the local, state, and national level
  • Ensure our elected leaders reflect the values of the Democratic party and our community
  • Hold elected leadership accountable for working to eliminate all vestiges of systemic racism in Fairfax County, throughout Virginia and across our great country
  • Maximize voter turnout and engagement

Our hearts are with all families impacted by racial injustices. Even as our community grieves with you, our resolve to make structural change grows. We stand with you now and always.

UPDATED: Vienna Election to Take Place May 19

Wednesday night, April 22, the Virginia State Senate voted to reject Gov. Northam’s request to move the May municipal elections to November, a request supported by the Virginia House of Delegates. Gov. Northam used his executive authority to move the elections from the original date of May 5 to May 19, 2020. This decision puts voter’s health and safety at risk.

For those of us in the Hunter Mill District, the decision not to delay the municipal elections means the Vienna Town Elections will take place on May 19th.

Prior to Northam’s request, HMDDC was running an active phone banking operation into Vienna to encourage voters to vote absentee by mail. We put that operation on hold when the Governor’s request was made. We now need to resume our calls into the Vienna voters who are eligible to vote in the Town Council Election.

NOTE: The Vienna Town Elections are non-partisan and candidates run as independents. This year many of those “independents” support Republican causes and candidates. This includes Linda Colbert who is running for Mayor.

For those of you who were previously helping make calls, thank you. You should have received a message earlier this morning from Joanne Collins and Susan Pederson regarding how to proceed.

For the rest of you, we need your help now. We need additional volunteers to call voters in the Town of Vienna to remind them of the town elections, ask them to request an absentee ballot, and let them know two members of HMDDC (Howard Springsteen & Roy Baldwin) are running for office. This is a virtual phone bank that does not require you to commit to specific times. Please consider donating some time over the next few days to participate in this effort.

Vienna Local Elections [UPDATED]

The Town of Vienna elections currently scheduled for May 5 may be postponed. Governor Northam announced on April 8, 2020 his recommendation to postpone, among other things, the Town of Vienna elections, and proposed November 3 as the new date. The General Assembly must vote on this plan before the elections are officially postponed. We will endeavor to keep Hunter Mill Democrats updated about this process as it changes.

The election will be to elect a new mayor and three members of the Vienna Town Council. Two Hunter Mill Democrats are running: Howard Springsteen for mayor and Roy Baldwin for councilman.

The Virginia Department of Elections encourages voters to protect their health during the COVID-19 outbreak. Voting absentee by mail in the Vienna Town Elections is strongly encouraged. Voters may choose reason “2A My disability or illness” for Absentee voting.

Important Dates [the below dates pertain to the May 5 elections and are subject to change depending on whether and to what date the elections are postponed]:

  • April 13: Voter Registration Deadline (In Person/By Mail) 5:00 p.m.; online: 11:59 p.m.
  • April 28: Deadline to apply to receive an Absentee Ballot by mail, fax and online: 5:00 p.m.
  • May 2: Deadline for In Person Absentee Voting, 5:00 p.m.
  • May 5: Absentee Ballot return deadline, 7:00 p.m.

Next Hunter Mill Democrats Meeting: Wednesday, March 11, 2020

The March meeting of the Hunter Mill Democrats will take place on Wednesday, March 11, 2020 at 7:30pm at the North County Governmental Center, 1801 Cameron Glen Dr., Reston, VA.

By then, Virginia will have cast its votes for the Democratic Presidential Primary, so we should all be preparing to come together and work to put the country back on track with a Blue Wave in 2020.

Next Hunter Mill Democrats Meeting: Wednesday, January 8, 2020

The January meeting of the Hunter Mill Democrats will take place on Wednesday, January 8, 2020 at 7:30pm at the Reston Regional Library, 11925 Bowman Towne Dr, Reston, VA 20190.

This is the first meeting of the new year, and occurs on the same day of the start of the 2020 Virginia General Assembly session. It’s time to get to work in the new year, so come to the meeting to learn about what you can do to help keep the blue wave rolling.

It’s Time to Renew Your Membership/Join the Committee for 2020–2021

When you join as a member of the Hunter Mill Democrats, you are also joining the Fairfax County Democratic Committee (FCDC), which is the largest political organization in Virginia.

Every two years, the current term of membership expires for all members and new two-year term gets ready to begin. Members of the Hunter Mill Democrats have special privileges in meetings and also get to make decisions on items such as policy positions FCDC may take, what kind of voter engagement projects should be prioritized, and how the party spends its money, for example.

If you’d like to become a member (or continue as a member), you’ll need to apply by December 1st at 5:00 PM. Click here for an application for the Hunter Mill District.

Members are elected! The Hunter Mill Democrats will be holding our caucus to elect members at 7 PM on Wednesday, December 11th at Lake Anne Elementary School. There is a cap of 130 members per district (not including Lifetime, ex oficio and Emeritus members). Click here to read the Fairfax County Democrats Resolution for Reorganization.

The caucus to elect members will be at 7pm, and the reorganization will be at 8:30pm. If applications for membership have not exceeded the 130-member cap, then the caucus will not be necessary, and the reorganization will start at 7pm.

Fairfax County Democrats Leadership Elections January 7th, 2020

On January 7th, the members who were elected in December will select the leadership of the Fairfax County Democratic Committee and will vote to pass the new Bylaws.  On the ballot will be the following offices:

FCDC Vice Chair Central Vice Chair for Outreach
FCDC Vice Chair North Corresponding Secretary
Vice Chair for Precinct Operations Recording Secretary

Anyone seeking election to one of these positions must send an email to elections@fairfaxdemocrats.org stating their intention to run by 5:00pm on December 27th, 2019 in order to have their names printed on the ballot.  (To run for these positions, you also need to become a member of FCDC.)

2019 VICTORY!

A huge thank you to all of our volunteers who called voters, canvassed voters, donated money and helped all our candidates up and down the ticket this election cycle! We would especially like to thank our Fighting4Fairfax organizer Henry Pratt, and campaign manager, Jeremy Cullimore.

Next Hunter Mill Dems Meeting: Wednesday, 10/9/19

This is the last regular meeting of the Hunter Mill Democrats before the November 5, 2019 election, so come hear from campaigns and party organizers to learn how to help Democrats win in 2019.
